I met her in 2008. It was a warm summer morning in Thessaloniki, and we were in touching distance of the White Tower.<\/p>\n

She gave me her hand. She shook mine with warmth and she looked me directly in the eyes.
\nShe won me over from the very first second.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

If love at first sight exists, then this was friendship at first glimpse<\/em>.
\nShe convulsed me, she captivated me with her energy, with her melodic way of talking. With her perfect use of the Greek language.
\nIt’s the way she \u201chits\u201d the consonants. Her articulation. The way she arranges words. Her extensive education. Her reading. Her stimulus. Her unparalleled aesthetics…<\/p>\n

Disciplined; an endowment from the many years spent in dance classes and as a result of theGerman influence acquired while doing her masters degree in Dresden..

Even when s<\/span><\/b>he walks <\/b>she appears to <\/b>danc<\/b>e<\/b>. She<\/b> levitates<\/b>. She is a pixie. Ageless and<\/b><\/em> unchanged. She has this magic thing about her, like most dancers. They own their body, they define it.<\/em> Plastic, flexible with <\/em><\/b><\/span>infinite <\/b>potential. They <\/b>communicate <\/b>with it. They talk through it.\u00a0<\/b><\/em>
<\/span><\/b>When she moans just don\u2019t listen to her:<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t feel good, I haven\u2019t exercised properly for a while…\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

She is a tornado.
<\/b>A <\/span><\/b>warm wind. A wind enchants you, draws you in with its allure.\u00a0
An impressive, impetuous, torrent. She occupies the space even though she is as lightweight as a feather.
She is talented — very talented, and she knows it, but she doesn\u2019t show off. <\/span><\/b>Even though she is well aware of it she doesn\u2019t <\/span><\/b>brag about it. <\/b><\/p>\n

She has nothing to do with publicity, the lobbies and the cliques of the artistic community. It\u2019s not a matter of snobbery. It\u2019s a matter of her antenna; she is \u201cbroadcasting\u201d on a different frequency.<\/span><\/p>\n

She doesn\u2019t boast of her astonishing resume. This is something that I\u2019ve noticed <\/em><\/span>with many people who have impressive academic backgrounds<\/span> and important collaborations. They don\u2019t talk about themselves; their accomplishments speak<\/span> on their behalf.\u00a0
She never uses \u201cI\u201d. She always uses this tender <\/span>collective <\/em>: \u201cWe are preparing, we are creating, we are directing\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

She is not \u201cmeowing\u201d like cats and you cannot subjugate her. She only drops her guard for a big love, a big vision, or <\/span><\/b>immovable<\/b> Eros.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

She lives <\/span>through her dreams. She feeds them, using the solid materials of the arts as building blocks.<\/em><\/p>\n

She is artistic but she has nothing to do with<\/span> random artistic expression, she is not “flu artistc”. Every move, every choreography, every vowel that comes out of her mouth on stage, every move of her mind and body, it\u2019s anything but\u00a0<\/span>accidental. On the contrary<\/span>, every move <\/span>is meticulously calculated, with a defined structure, with an almost\u00a0mathematical-like analysis, an explanation.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

When she smiles she becomes irresistible.\u00a0 Her whole being smiles, every cell of her body.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/b>She is <\/b>very opinionated and logical <\/b>but she can be flexible<\/b> if she so desires<\/b>. <\/b>This really o<\/b>nly <\/b>happens <\/b>when she <\/b>is faced with someone <\/b>she admires. Her looks change with unfairness. She <\/b>doesn\u2019t respond well<\/b> <\/b>to rudeness<\/b>, <\/b>to\u00a0<\/b>boasting, <\/b>or to inane<\/b> stupidity.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

She gets transformed and \u201cdarker\u201dwhen she demystifies somebody. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Disappointment permeates her as well; a bit like <\/span>the kid that you promised a different world<\/span> to and suddenly put <\/span>into a playground without swings.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

She is from porcelain but yet she is not fragile.<\/span> She has this internal strength <\/span><\/b>derived from <\/b>\u00a0know<\/b>ing<\/b> what <\/b>s<\/b>he doesn<\/span><\/b>\u2019<\/b>t like. And this is a <\/span><\/b>very solid foundation<\/b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

You won\u2019t find<\/b> her <\/span><\/b>engrossed in<\/b> her cell phone<\/b> and don\u2019t bother searching for her on one<\/b>. <\/b>She always uses an old one as a statement. Her battery is always dying, it never functions properly, but she is always there for me.<\/span> We meet wherever we overlap . As soon as I step my foot in Thessaloniki, she is the first number I dial. We start with a simple coffee and we continue with food, drinks and a mandatory <\/span><\/b>\u201c<\/b>stop over<\/b>\u201d<\/b>at her house where her wonderful <\/b>parents<\/b> await<\/span><\/b>.<\/b><\/p>\n

At some point I told her:<\/p>\n

\u201c Don\u2019t get me wrong. I really appreciate actors but I think that I appreciate a little bit more the dancers, the musicians, the painters, the sculptors. Because they can not wake up one day and just build a career because they are simply good looking and a bit talented. To become a dancer, musician or painter you need by default to work hard. You will have worn down the soles of your shoes metaphorically speaking and you will have for sure counted wounds from the hard work. \u0399 bow down to these people.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

She nodded a bit skeptically, yet her voice was simmering:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are the only one who says that Eftychia. And a few others. Trust me. They don\u2019t care about dance as a form of art. Art is just the accompaniment to them . They may not care about anything; or about anything that is outside of the shape of the shadow that their body outlines.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The messages we exchange are never ordinary.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is my Eftychia? (Happiness for Greek). You pledged her to me. I have also much \u201chappiness\u201d to share. Your voice is missing\u201d.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m in Kavala. But I can climb even on a horse to come and see you.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want to bury art in this country. But how can you bury something that is eternal?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel tired. I work like a dog. There are so many things going on. Just come, I want to share them only with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am trying to fill the gap you left… I am listening to your voice. A kiss for you, my melody. \u201c<\/p>\n

The party theme is \u201c80s and 90s! You should get dressed like Sofia Aliberti (Greek actress from the 80s) and you should just show up\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey just brought me the cell phone. I had forgotten it at the rehearsal. A kiss to your pillow. I miss your words.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am just this very moment with a device in my hands. Cultivate contemplations so we could breathe miracles\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you going to accept me? I\u2019m coming to Athens.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

These are the messages we exchange. Retro correspondence, like the old times.<\/p>\n

We distill both important and insignificant secrets, our entire life into these exchanges.<\/p>\n

Konstantina Kastellou is a vintage species.<\/p>\n

The stage is hers and I can never have enough of her, neither in life nor on stage.<\/strong>
\n She is one of those people. One life is not enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I gave Konstantina these 24 verbs and she created sentences out of them. It\u2019s the synopsis of her Alphabet, of her personal code. This is her wonderful vintage world.<\/strong><\/p>\n
