Ι was never a big fan of buying everything from the super market. This impersonal era of nothingness, with this mass approach to customer service without any substance, without any eye contact.
I need to look the shopkeeper directly in the eyes , and for him to explain everything to me. I want to know to whom I am speaking to. I relish the small talk, the heartfelt “ good morning” while he is winking to me: “Once again, you bought the best tomatoes”.
I want to buy fish directly from the fisherman, meat from the butcher, coffee from the coffee shop, bread from the bakery and fruits and vegetables from the green grocer or even better from the vegetable market.
Directly from the producer. How great would it be if every producer could earn the profit margin he deserves, cutting out the middleman…
Living on a planet where we destroy in order to get destroyed, it is even more important to support small farms, independent producers and eclectic products.
In whatever concerns me, I prefer the biological and the organic products. I eat meat only a couple of times a month, and it’s mainly meat produced by my uncle in the village. I try not to buy chicken unless I know the producer. I buy fish from the fishermen and honey and olive oil is sourced from producers that my mother trusts for as long as I can remember. I only choose seasonal fruits and vegetables from southern Europe while legumes come from a small family farm.
One needs to take personal care of what one offers their body on a daily basis. And yes, you should create your own network of suppliers and favourite products.
Do not forget: Always choose specialised stores, open markets, small producers and artisans because they are specialised in very specific products and they invest in quality. They also care for the environment and yes indeed, this is one of their top priorities.
We choose to eat well not because we are aiming to live for 100 years. Nobody knows how long he or she will live nor the course of his life.
You should eat well for a healthy now. To provide yourself the fuels your body needs. For you to become the best version of yourself.
Take care of what you give to yourself. Your body will reciprocate.
We are what we eat. You are what you eat.
I believe that it is more than obvious that I adore the bazaars, the open markets, the flea markets, these colourful beehives, this assembly of tastes, this party of the senses. Borough Market epitomizes this type of market.
Υou approach the market and upon entering you are welcomed by a feast of colours and aromas.
You smile subconsciously.
What you see is real.
Products from all over the world. All the colours thrown onto the same canvas, that of the Borough Market.
All the aromas intermingled in the most colourful and tasteful stroll you will ever do in London.
Borough Market is located in Southwark and Borough High Street, and its history dates back 1000 years. Borough, then as now, was a place defined by its position at one end of London Bridge—for centuries, the only route across the river into the capital. The buildings of Borough Market were constructed in 1851, and the entrance at Southwark Street was designed in Art Deco style in 1932.
Borough Market consists of approximately 100 different stalls.
“Many of the Market’s stallholders are themselves producers: the farmer who reared the animal, the fisherman who caught the fish, the baker who baked the bread. Other traders have built their reputations on seeking out small-scale artisan producers. A huge diversity of products find their way to Borough: fish, meat, vegetables, cheeses, bakery products, coffees, sweets and imported products from different countries.
At the same time you can taste food from different cuisines from all around the world. Together, the Market’s stalls, shops and restaurants reflect London’s status as a truly global city, with traditional British produce sitting alongside regional specialities from around the world.”
Wonderful Marianna, the inspiration behind this whole concept store, has created one of the most beautiful and delicious corners of Borough market, the great greek Oliveology. Our best products, in tasteful packaging with respect and love for the small farms, for the independent producers and for biological products, all made in Greece.
